Children in Need- Wales

Currently there are around 20 children and young people with HIV living across Wales and treated across Liverpool, Cardiff and Swansea Hospitals. There is wide geographical spread combined with low prevelance for HIV+ young people across Wales, coupled with historically low support provision and specialist information available. CHIVA were asked to carry out a consultation for creating a peer support model. In October 2014, five HIV positive young people came together in Herefordshire, for 2 days to explore the group's needs.

The findings were that this group of young people desperately wanted to have the opportunity to meet with others in a safe space to talk about living with and managing HIV through adolescence and early adulthood, as well as to meet each other socially.

Since this initial consultation, the group meet 3 times a year, for a day together. Each time the group meets they have a HIV related workshop with two CHIVA staff members, followed by a meal and a fun social activity, including the Dr Who Experience and adventure golf in Cardiff.

Thank you to BBC Children in Need Wales for continuing to fund this work.
